SUMMARY:Public Health Roadmap: Systems Change Strategies to Address Youth Cessation Webcast
DESCRIPTION:Register for American Lung Association’s Public Health Roadmap: Systems Change Strategies to Address Youth Cessation Webcast on Tuesday\, September 28\, 2021\, at 11 am CST. \nTobacco use by adolescents and young adults is an immediate health concern:   \n\nNinety-five percent of today’s tobacco users started using before the age of 21.\nMany young people who use e-cigarettes also smoke cigarettes.\nThere is some evidence that young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke cigarettes in the future.\nIf cigarette smoking continues at the current rate among youth in this country\, 5.6 million of today’s Americans younger than 18 will die early from a smoking-related illness. That’s about 1 of every 13 Americans aged 17 years or younger who are alive today.\n\nCDC data shows most youth who use tobacco products want to quit. Treatments exist to help youth quit successfully\, unfortunately barriers prevent some kids from quitting tobacco.  Opportunities to expand treatment and interventions for youth can be improved by understanding how youth interact with care extenders in many types of settings\, in the healthcare system and beyond.  It is more important than ever for public health professionals to be equipped with resources\, strategies and tools to address barriers and leverage unique opportunities to providing cessation services for youth. \nDuring this interactive webcast\, intended for tobacco control program staff and other public health professionals of any level\, attendees can expect to: \n\nIncrease confidence to engage and partner with systems and care extenders for youth that are interested in improving how they promote and integrate cessation services.\nLearn more about strategies to engage care extenders in the community and understand how tobacco control program staff can promote cessation for youth.\nLearn about new resources and tools for public health professionals\, to coach community partners and health systems through road-tested systems change strategies that promote youth cessation integration.\n\nRegister Today: https://app.webinar.net/xW9GoXOk7YP

SUMMARY:The Clinical Edge Series: Co-Treatment of Tobacco and Cannabis Use Disorders By the Behavioral Health & Wellness Program - University of Colorado
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming Webinar – The Clinical Edge Series: Co-Treatment of Tobacco and Cannabis Use Disorders \nPresented by the Behavioral Health & Wellness Program – University of Colorado \nWednesday\, June 23rd at 2 pm ET \nRegister Here!  \nThe United States is experiencing two colliding public health trajectories. New nicotine delivery devices are attracting new users at nearly three times the rate that cigarettes did just a few years ago. At the same time\, nearly the entire country has passed laws protecting both medical and recreational marijuana use. These trends have made co-use of cannabis and nicotine very common among adolescents and adults. Long-standing clinical approaches to promoting health behavior change provide a solid foundation for addressing polysubstance use. Providers have an opportunity to concurrently address multiple addictions\, create cross-cutting policy\, and integrate co-treatment into existing workflows. This presentation will detail how integrated approaches might optimize care delivery and treatment outcomes. We will:\n• Review the evidence-base for concurrent treatment of tobacco and marijuana use\n• Describe strategies for integrating polysubstance use treatment into screening\,\ntreatment\, and referral\n• Outline how to create and sustain policies for nicotine- and cannabis-free treatment\nsettings

SUMMARY:Stigma\, Biases and Shame: Tobacco Use and Wellbeing Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Title: Stigma\, Biases and Shame: Tobacco Use and Wellbeing Masterclass\nDate: Thursday\, May 27\, 3:00 – 5:00 pm ET \nDescription: Stigma around mental illness and substance use challenges can contribute to increased symptoms and reduced likelihood of receiving and accessing treatment. Individuals who also use tobacco encounter psychosocial factors such as stigma and may experience increased strain on their health and mental wellbeing that impacts their motivation to quit tobacco. Research has shown that addressing biases and shame can increase understanding of symptoms and encourage utilization of services. \nJoin the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control on Thursday\, May 27\, from 3 – 5 p.m. ET for a real-time discussion with subject matter experts from the University of California San Francisco and the University of Texas at Austin\, Jason M. Satterfield\, Ph.D.\, and Richard Bottner\, DHA\, PA-C. This masterclass will equip you with the knowledge and tools to: \n\nDefine and discuss the history and impact of shame and stigma on individuals who use tobacco and have a mental health and substance use challenge.\nUnderstand the social\, psychological and cultural processes that create self-stigmatization\, social stigma and structural stigma\, and how each might influence access to and engagement with high-quality treatment.\nDescribe ways health care providers and health systems propagate stigma and shame-mediated health disparities related to mental health and substance use\, including tobacco and alcohol dependence.\nExplore and apply methods to reduce stigma through empowerment and systems structure improvements.\nImplement steps to reduce stigma within your organization and communities that will promote smoking cessation and treatment.\n\nRegister HERE Today! \nPlease note\, we anticipate limited capacity and registration does not guarantee a spot in the live training. Please join the meeting early as available spots will be assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nThis event is co-hosted by UCSF’s Smoking Cessation Leadership Center\, the SAMHSA National Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Recovery and the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control\, supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
