SUMMARY:Tobacco in culture: The renormalization and glamorization of smoking
DESCRIPTION:Smoking imagery has no place in our culture. Over the past several years\, we’ve experienced a pervasive re-emergence of smoking imagery that is glamorizing and renormalizing a deadly habit to millions of impressionable young people. Research shows that higher exposure to smoking iimagery makes youth twice as likely to smoke. Tobacco use continues to be portrayed positively amongst celebrities in movies\, video games and increasingly in streaming video content. 79% of shows most popular with young people between the ages of 15-24 depict tobacco use. This panel discussion will explore why tobacco imagery is making a resurgence and whether entertainment companies have a responsibility to address the issue of tobacco use on-screen\, given the outsized impact on younger audiences. \nPanelists: \n\nRobin Koval\, President and CEO\, Truth Initiative\nMichael Tynan\, Public Health Analyst\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\nDr. Joanne Cranwell\, Lecturer\, Department of Health\, University of Bath U.K.\nSteven Asarch\, Writer\, Newsweek Player One\nKat Wojsiat\, Reality Check of NY\n\nModerator: \n\nTravis Andrews\, Reporter\, The Washington Post\n\nWHEN:\nWednesday\, May 16\, 2018 \nProgram begins promptly at 11:30 a.m.\nLunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. \nWHERE:\nNewseum\nKnight Conference Center\, Eighth Floor\n555 Pennsylvania Avenue\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C.  20001 \nAccess the Conference Center from the 6th St entrance. \n(The event will also be broadcast live online. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Power of Collaboration: Building Cross-Sector Collaborations to End Health Disparities
DESCRIPTION:The need is clear: behavioral health providers and public health leaders must rally together to address the health disparities impacting African Americans\, a community historically underserved by tobacco control and behavioral health efforts. \nAlthough anyone can develop a mental health problem\, African Americans sometimes experience more severe forms of mental illness at a higher rate due to unmet needs\, social and structural barriers. Rates of everyday cigarette use among those with more serious mental illness is almost double that of those without serious mental illness\, and more than 72\,000 African Americans are diagnosed with a tobacco-related cancer each year. Health complications such as heart disease and stroke remain staggeringly higher than other groups. \nThat’s why the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco & Cancer Control is joining the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the National African American Tobacco Prevention Network (NAATPN) for a webinar Tuesday\, May 8 at 2 p.m. ET. CDC-funded National Networks working to eliminate smoking and cancer related disparities\, community organizers and public health officials will take a deep dive into coordinated efforts across agencies to reduce tobacco-related disparities within the African American community. \nJoin us as we provide tools to create a strategy between behavioral health providers\, national networks\, community groups\, and state public health and tobacco prevention programming to support smoking cessation initiatives in your community. \nAre you ready to help lead the way? \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:Leveraging ALA’s New Hospital Community Benefit Toolkit to Promote Tobacco Cessation Among Community Providers
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 22\, 2018 \n3:00 – 4:00 PM ET \nRegister here to receive login information \nMore than half of the hospitals in the United States are private\, nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt.  Since 2012\, they have been required to conduct Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) every three years and implement a strategy to deal with issues identified by that Needs Assessment.  Data indicates that average spending by tax-exempt hospitals on community benefits has not changed much since 2012. Most hospitals have completed just one CHNA cycle and are struggling with how to have the most impact within the limits of their resources and expertise. \nThe American Lung Association believes this creates an opportunity for public health to partner and assist these hospitals. In December of 2017\, the American Lung Association released a new toolkit to provide state and local public health professionals with the tools and guidance they need to be informed and active participants in hospital Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs).  The toolkit provides ways to integrate tobacco into the CHNA process in a way that complements other community needs. You can view the toolkit here. \nJoin the American Lung Association to learn more about Hospital Community Benefit requirements and a new toolkit on the Hospital Community Benefit and tobacco cessation. Webinar participants will learn about the new toolkit and receive tactical\, hands-on ideas for how and why to use it. To join us\, please register here. \nFeatured Speakers \nClaire Brockbank\, Segue Consulting \nMichele Patarino\, Segue Consulting \nFor more information\, please contact Anne DiGiulio at anne.digiulio@lung.org. \nFor more resources on tobacco cessation policies\, please visit www.lung.or/cessationcoverage.

Here participants will apply the framework to current health equity and tobacco control program priorities. \n  \nPlease CLICK HERE to register.  Contact support@TCTCollab.com with any questions regarding this webinar.  Thank you!
