SUMMARY:Leveraging ALA’s New Hospital Community Benefit Toolkit to Promote Tobacco Cessation Among Community Providers
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 22\, 2018  \n3:00 – 4:00 PM ET  \nRegister here to receive login information \nMore than half of the hospitals in the United States are private\, nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt.  Since 2012\, they have been required to conduct Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) every three years and implement a strategy to deal with issues identified by that Needs Assessment.  Data indicates that average spending by tax-exempt hospitals on community benefits has not changed much since 2012. Most hospitals have completed just one CHNA cycle and are struggling with how to have the most impact within the limits of their resources and expertise. \nThe American Lung Association believes this creates an opportunity for public health to partner and assist these hospitals. In December of 2017\, the American Lung Association released a new toolkit to provide state and local public health professionals with the tools and guidance they need to be informed and active participants in hospital Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs).  The toolkit provides ways to integrate tobacco into the CHNA process in a way that complements other community needs. The nationally recognized faculty brings a wealth of expertise in tobacco control\, nicotine addiction\, medical consequences of tobacco use\, treatment of tobacco dependence\, program development and evaluation\, and treating tobacco addiction with special populations such as those with mental illness and medical co-morbidities. The training format allows for an interactive and comprehensive educational experience. The CTTS training meets all of the requirements set forth in the US Public Health Service Guidelines as well as the standards for competencies for tobacco treatment specialists developed by the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD). \nWho Should Take This Training?\nTobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Health care professionals working in various settings routinely have opportunities to treat people for tobacco dependence. These include nurses and nurse practitioners\, physicians\, dentists\, psychiatrists\, psychologists\, physician assistants\, respiratory therapists\, mental health professionals\, health educators\, addiction professionals\, certified counselors and therapists\, and social workers. DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nPlease see below for a grant opportunity from Truth Initiative. \nIn the fight to curb tobacco use in the U.S.\, college campuses have emerged as a critical battleground. \nThat’s because virtually all smokers—99 percent—start smoking before turning 26 years old. Community colleges and minority-serving academic institutions are especially important because they tend to serve students who are at greater risk for tobacco use\, including low-income and first-generation students. \nOver the past two years\, Truth Initiative® has awarded funding to 135 historically black colleges and universities and community colleges to advocate for\, adopt and implement a 100 percent smoke- or tobacco-free policy. These institutions have joined the growing movement of smoke-free colleges\, which multiplied in number from 446 in 2010 to over 1\,900 in 2017. \n To keep the momentum going\, Truth Initiative is launching its new Tobacco-Free College Program\, which offers 17-month grants of up to $20\,000 to community colleges and minority-serving institutions to adopt a 100 percent tobacco-free college policy.
