SUMMARY:Leveraging ALA’s New Hospital Community Benefit Toolkit to Promote Tobacco Cessation Among Community Providers
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 22\, 2018 \n3:00 – 4:00 PM ET \nRegister here to receive login information \nMore than half of the hospitals in the United States are private\, nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt.  Since 2012\, they have been required to conduct Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) every three years and implement a strategy to deal with issues identified by that Needs Assessment.  Data indicates that average spending by tax-exempt hospitals on community benefits has not changed much since 2012. Most hospitals have completed just one CHNA cycle and are struggling with how to have the most impact within the limits of their resources and expertise. \nThe American Lung Association believes this creates an opportunity for public health to partner and assist these hospitals. In December of 2017\, the American Lung Association released a new toolkit to provide state and local public health professionals with the tools and guidance they need to be informed and active participants in hospital Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs).  The toolkit provides ways to integrate tobacco into the CHNA process in a way that complements other community needs. You can view the toolkit here. \nJoin the American Lung Association to learn more about Hospital Community Benefit requirements and a new toolkit on the Hospital Community Benefit and tobacco cessation. Webinar participants will learn about the new toolkit and receive tactical\, hands-on ideas for how and why to use it. To join us\, please register here. \nFeatured Speakers \nClaire Brockbank\, Segue Consulting \nMichele Patarino\, Segue Consulting \nFor more information\, please contact Anne DiGiulio at anne.digiulio@lung.org. \nFor more resources on tobacco cessation policies\, please visit www.lung.or/cessationcoverage.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 21\, 2018 \n3:00-4:30 PM ET \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS WEBINAR \nOur first webinar in the 2018 series will introduce participants to a strategic framework (Context – Heart – Head) that helps guide health equity-related strategy development and communications. Originally developed by the Metropolitan Group\, the Context – Heart – Head framework supports the shifting of policies\, systems and norms by connecting an issue with the existing values and worldviews of its stakeholders.  It helps users deliver ‘calls to action’ that are compelling\, well-received and acted upon. \n  \nAfter a brief introduction to the topic\, webinar participants will join facilitated breakout sessions of regionally-based groups. Here participants will apply the framework to current health equity and tobacco control program priorities. \n  \nPlease CLICK HERE to register.  Contact support@TCTCollab.com with any questions regarding this webinar.  Thank you!

SUMMARY:Apply: 2017 Tobacco-Free College Program for Community Colleges and Minority-Serving Institutions
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nPlease see below for a grant opportunity from Truth Initiative. \nIn the fight to curb tobacco use in the U.S.\, college campuses have emerged as a critical battleground. \nThat’s because virtually all smokers—99 percent—start smoking before turning 26 years old. Community colleges and minority-serving academic institutions are especially important because they tend to serve students who are at greater risk for tobacco use\, including low-income and first-generation students. \nOver the past two years\, Truth Initiative® has awarded funding to 135 historically black colleges and universities and community colleges to advocate for\, adopt and implement a 100 percent smoke- or tobacco-free policy. These institutions have joined the growing movement of smoke-free colleges\, which multiplied in number from 446 in 2010 to over 1\,900 in 2017. \n To keep the momentum going\, Truth Initiative is launching its new Tobacco-Free College Program\, which offers 17-month grants of up to $20\,000 to community colleges and minority-serving institutions to adopt a 100 percent tobacco-free college policy. Grantees receive guidance through webinars\, learning communities and one-on-one consultations throughout the grant period. \nHere’s how to apply: \n\nDownload and read the grant guidelines and application information\, including timeline and budget samples.\nRegister for one of two informational webinars on Aug. 16 and Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. ET. Participation is optional.\nApply using our online application.\n\n  \nThe deadline for applications is Wednesday\, Oct. 11\, 2017. \n  \nLearn more about the disproportionate toll tobacco takes on certain populations\, including people in low-income communities\, and racial and ethnic minorities.
