SUMMARY:Apply: 2017 Tobacco-Free College Program for Community Colleges and Minority-Serving Institutions
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nPlease see below for a grant opportunity from Truth Initiative. \nIn the fight to curb tobacco use in the U.S.\, college campuses have emerged as a critical battleground. \nThat’s because virtually all smokers—99 percent—start smoking before turning 26 years old. Community colleges and minority-serving academic institutions are especially important because they tend to serve students who are at greater risk for tobacco use\, including low-income and first-generation students. \nOver the past two years\, Truth Initiative® has awarded funding to 135 historically black colleges and universities and community colleges to advocate for\, adopt and implement a 100 percent smoke- or tobacco-free policy. These institutions have joined the growing movement of smoke-free colleges\, which multiplied in number from 446 in 2010 to over 1\,900 in 2017. \n To keep the momentum going\, Truth Initiative is launching its new Tobacco-Free College Program\, which offers 17-month grants of up to $20\,000 to community colleges and minority-serving institutions to adopt a 100 percent tobacco-free college policy. Grantees receive guidance through webinars\, learning communities and one-on-one consultations throughout the grant period. \nHere’s how to apply: \n\nDownload and read the grant guidelines and application information\, including timeline and budget samples.\nRegister for one of two informational webinars on Aug. 16 and Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. ET. Participation is optional.\nApply using our online application.\n\n  \nThe deadline for applications is Wednesday\, Oct. 11\, 2017. \n  \nLearn more about the disproportionate toll tobacco takes on certain populations\, including people in low-income communities\, and racial and ethnic minorities.

SUMMARY:Reducing Breast Cancer Disparities at the State Level: Successes and Lessons Learned from the ASTHO Breast Cancer Learning Community
DESCRIPTION:Dear Collegues\, \nAccording to the CDC\, black women in the U.S. are approximately 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women. In fall 2015\, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) gathered a Breast Cancer Disparities Learning Community with state health department breast and cervical cancer programs from Arizona\, Tennessee\, and West Virginia to identify and close breast cancer disparities. Over the course of the learning community\, ASTHO staff worked with state teams and national experts under the guidance of CDC to strengthen states’ epidemiologic and GIS mapping capacity\, and implement data-driven action plans with the support of key stakeholders. To date\, all three states have conducted data analyses\, produced GIS maps\, and are executing their action plans to reduce sociodemographic disparities in breast cancer screening\, follow-up time after abnormal screening result\, and treatment quality. \n  \nJoin us for this national webinar that will feature presentations from all three state teams that describe the breast cancer disparities in their states\, healthcare and community partners involved\, and key successes in reducing breast cancer disparities. ASTHO will use this webinar to provide background on the ASTHO learning community and to share a new resource with all attendees\, the ASTHO Breast Cancer Disparities Online Toolkit. The toolkit is an electronic repository of lessons learned from the ASTHO Breast Cancer Disparities Learning Community available to other states and stakeholders interested in identifying and addressing breast cancer disparities at the state and local level.

SUMMARY:Diversity Dialogue: Unconscious Linguistic Bias
DESCRIPTION:Unconscious Linguistic Bias: Innovative Psycholinguistic-Based Strategies to Dramatically Increase the Representation of Minority Executives in Leadership and Governance Positions\nWednesday\, September 27\, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. ET // Noon – 1:30 p.m. CT // 10:00 – 11:30 p.m. ET \nREGISTER HERE. \nOverview: Unconscious linguistic bias affects us all\, though we do not have these biases intentionally. There are many negative consequences of linguistic bias\, however\, and they contribute to why minority candidates are not well-represented in higher-level executive positions. In this webinar\, she will provide participants with nuanced\, research-based strategies designed to help mitigate the effects of unconscious linguistic bias. This will allow organizations to more easily and successfully diversify their leadership and governance teams. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand what linguistic bias is and how it can negatively affect our decisions\nDiscover the connections between how leaders sound and their upward trajectory\nLearn concrete strategies\, designed to increase the representation of minority executives in the highest-level leadership positions\, that can begin to be implemented immediately\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker: Caroline Latterman\, Ph.D.\, M.S.Ed.\, Founder\, Linguistic Consulting. \nClick here for Caroline’s biography. \nPrice: Complimentary for Institute members\, $99 for non-Institute members.

It is common for individuals who smoke cigarettes or use e-cigarettes to also use marijuana and with these high rates of simultaneous use\, it is important for behavioral health providers to know the current research and treatment options. This presentation will include information about what we know and don’t know about the intersection of nicotine dependence\, marijuana\, and e-cigarette use\, as well as the potential benefits of simultaneously addressing all three with the people you serve. \nDuring this webinar\, participants will learn about: \n\nThe prevalence of nicotine dependence\, e-cigarettes\, and marijuana use\nEffective treatment strategies for co-occurring marijuana and nicotine addiction\nEfforts to create a national dialogue on the intersection of nicotine dependence\, marijuana\, and e-cigarette use\n\nChad Morris\, Ph.D. is a psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is committed to studying the chronic and modifiable behaviors that lead to unnecessary morbidity and mortality among at risk populations\, particularly tobacco use. In 2006\, he created the Behavioral Health & Wellness Program which is a multidisciplinary center of excellence for public policy\, research\, training\, and clinical care. Dr. Morris has been the principal investigator for over 20 psychosocial and pharmacological tobacco cessation studies across the lifespan. SUMMARY:Webinar: Tobacco and Cancer-Related Health Insurance Benefits in Marketplace Plans Preparing for the 2018 Open Enrollment Period (Nov. 1 – Dec. 15\, 2017)
DESCRIPTION:Host: Nuestras Voces (Our Voices) National Hispanic Network to Reduce Tobacco-Related and Cancer Health Disparities\nWhen: Thursday\, September 21\, 2017\nTime: 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm EST \nDespite gains since the launch of the Affordable Care Act’s insurance marketplaces in 2014\, Hispanics remain the group most likely to be uninsured.
