SUMMARY:E-Cigarette Summit -Science\, Regulation & Public Health
DESCRIPTION:The Summit will take place at The Georgetown Marriott Hotel\, in Washington\, DC on Monday\, May 8\, 2017. View the program at  www.e-cigarette-summit.com/usa. \nE-Cigarette Summit includes high level briefings from policy\, scientific and health experts and encourages interaction through panel debates and open floor discussions. Questions will be explored in a balanced and objective environment allowing attendees to build their knowledge and share their viewpoints. \n2017 will be a watershed year for electronic cigarettes as new regulations come in to effect across the US and many other countries.  These first attempts to regulate an entirely novel product category will set the agenda for decades to come and is likely to be viewed as a pivotal era in both tobacco control and combustible tobacco use in the future. \nGood regulation and policy is essential to ensure that the balance of benefits to risks for consumers and the broader public health is as positive as possible. How far regulation has to go to deliver these goals can only be informed by well-structured research and balanced analysis and communication of evidence.  The E-Cigarette Summit has a single aim of facilitating respectful dialogue and thoughtful analysis of the latest evidence in context of public health concerns. \nThere is no doubt that e-cigarettes remain one of the most controversial public health issues of our time and have created unprecedented divisions within long standing professional alliances across tobacco control\, public health and scientific communities.   The E-Cigarette Summit provides a much needed neutral platform to understand the issues that lie behind these differing perspectives and policy positions and explore how to balance the opportunity of e-cigarettes while remaining responsive to the potential risks. \nTo ensure neutrality\, the event is solely funded through individual delegate revenues and sponsorship from commercial or non-profit entities is not accepted.  To book your place please go to www.e-cigarette-summit.com/usa

SUMMARY:Webinar: Smoking Cessation Interventions with Behavioral Health Populations
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nThe American Psychological Association is hosting a webinar in early May\, titled “Smoking Cessation Interventions with Behavioral Health Populations.”  This webinar will be held on Thursday\, May 4th from 1:00pm – 2:30pm ET. \nPlease click on the title below to register for the webinar and see below for more details: \nSmoking Cessation Interventions with Behavioral Health Populations \nMay 4\, 2017 \n1:00 – 2:30 p.m. \nStudies show that people with behavioral health conditions (mental and/or substance use disorders) are more likely to smoke than those who do not. In addition\, smoking cessation may improve behavioral health conditions. Behavioral health professionals play an important role in screening for tobacco use and helping patients to quit. \n  \nThis 90-minute webinar is designed to inform behavioral healthcare providers about the intersection of smoking and behavioral health concerns\, the importance of screening and assessing patients for tobacco use\, and an understanding of cessation treatment approaches. Approaches and perspectives will be provided by a medical doctor\, social worker\, psychologist\, and a patient. \n  \nThe objectives of this webinar are to: \n  \n\nUnderstand the prevalence of smoking in behavioral health populations.\nLearn myths and benefits regarding tobacco use cessation in behavioral health populations.\nBecome familiar with examples of evidence-based cessation treatment approaches for behavioral health populations\n\n  \nPresenters: \n  \nErik Augustson\, PhD holds his doctorate in Clinical Psychology with post-doctoral training in Behavioral Medicine and Cancer Prevention\, and an MPH with a focus in Epidemiology. Since 2001\, he has worked within the Tobacco Control Research Branch at the National Cancer Institute where he is a Behavioral Scientist and Health Science Administrator. For more than a decade Dr. Augustson has worked on eHealth/mHealth interventions\, and serves as the Director of the Smokefree.gov Initiative which has grown to encompass 6 websites\, 12 text message programs\, 2 smartphone apps\, and multiple social media platforms. 3-6 million smokers interact with Smokefree.gov resources annually. \n  \nDr. Anita Smith Everett is the Chief Medical Officer at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The OCMO is positioned within SAMHSA to facilitate the development of policy\, practice and programs that comport with best practices and current trends in contemporary health care. Dr. Everett comes to SAMHSA with long term experience in the delivery and leadership of psychiatric services.  She has received the Patrick Henry award for outspoken advocacy in Virginia and has received special form the American Psychiatric Association commendation for outstanding leadership in healthcare reform. She has been a respected leader of community behavioral health services at Johns Hopkins in Maryland and at Valley Community Services Board in Virginia. \n  \nDoug Tipperman\, MSW is the Tobacco Policy Liaison for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  He coordinates SAMHSA’s Tobacco-Free Campaign\, which focuses on reducing tobacco use by persons with mental health or substance use disorders. In addition\, Doug serves on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Tobacco Control Steering Committee. Before his federal government service\, he worked extensively at the state and local level to promote public policies that reduce tobacco use. He has helped lead several successful policy change efforts including Maryland’s Clean Indoor Air Law\, which succeeded in making all Maryland restaurants and bars smoke-free. \n  \nRebecca is a 57 year old patient who struggled with depression. She started smoking cigarettes as a teenager\, and lived among a family of heavy smokers. Rebecca thought smoking might help her cope with her feelings\, but it led to her feeling more depressed. When her grandson was born\, Rebecca decided to quit smoking. She committed herself to a healthier lifestyle – mentally and physically. Now Rebecca runs 5Ks and feels encouraged by the positive changes and progress she’s made since quitting. \n  \n  \nTo register\, visit: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/8204356037102885378 \nFor questions\, write: ddevito@apa.org

SUMMARY:Virtual Event: Adverse Childhood Experiences in Multi-Unit Housing
DESCRIPTION:Health at Home: Adult Smoking and Adverse Childhood Experiences in Multi-Unit Housing\nAsk the Experts Virtual Session \nDate: February 17\, 2017\nTime: 2:30 – 4 pm ET\nHosted by: ASTHO \nRegister here: https://astho.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0ApfM0uJNiObkot  \nDescription:\nEliminating indoor smoking is the only way to protect nonsmokers from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke. For residents of multi-unit housing\, secondhand smoke can be a major concern\, as it can migrate from other units and common areas and travel through doorways\, cracks in walls\, electrical lines\, plumbing\, and ventilation systems. Secondhand smoke exposure is especially concerning for children\, who are in a critical stage of development. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) overall also pose a serious threat on health across the life course. How does adult smoking in multi-unit housing and ACEs intersect and where are the opportunities for public health to collaborate across sectors? The perspectives across maternal and child health\, tobacco prevention and control\, health equity\, and injury prevention will be explored through ASTHO’s Ask the Experts Virtual Session. \nASTHO has invited Dr. Camara Jones (Past APHA President)\, Darlene Huang (Tobacco Control Legal Consortium)\, and Dr. Joan Gillece (National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors) to participate on a panel moderated by Dr. Rahul Gupta (State Health Officer of West Virginia). These subject-matter experts will highlight and explore the intersection of adult smoking and ACEs with multi-unit housing\, introduce the public health implications of this crossroads\, and answer questions from you related to their area of expertise. \nWhen you register\, submit up to two questions that will be addressed by the speakers during the panel. The session will offer an engaging discussion among the panelists and will allow them to apply their different expertise areas to the intersections of tobacco control work with other disciplines. Participants will gain insight on how to engage stakeholders across these public health areas\, implement their work with new framing\, and prevent unintended consequences for disparate populations as a result of policy and program interventions.

SUMMARY:Cancer Survivorship Symposium: Advancing Care and Research
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE. \nAs a result of the progress in cancer care\, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. With two-thirds of Americans now living at least 5 years after a cancer diagnosis\, there are now 13.7 million cancer survivors living in the United States\, and millions more around the world. By 2022\, that number is expected to increase by 35%. Although the growing number of survivors is a welcome sign of progress\, this trend also presents a challenge because many of these individuals require significant\, ongoing care\, such as surveillance for cancer recurrence\, screening for new cancers\, and care for the long-term effects of their initial treatment. \nAs time from an initial diagnosis elapses\, survivors are more likely to receive care from their primary care practitioners (PCPs)\, and survivors with several comorbidities receive care from multiple providers\, underscoring the need to coordinate care among providers. Because uniform standards for the care of survivors have not been fully established\, significant efforts are required to understand the needs of survivors and to develop models of comprehensive\, coordinated care that meet those needs. \nThis unique collaboration among the American Academy of Family Physicians\, the American College of Physicians\, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology will provide information about survivorship issues that both primary care physicians and oncologists are faced with throughout the cancer care continuum. The Symposium represents an innovative approach to education and patient care. \nVIEW PROGRAM \nKEY DATES:\nAUGUST 10\, 2016\nRegistration and Hotel Reservations Open \nOCTOBER 4\, 2016\, AT 11:59 PM (EDT)\nAbstract Submission Deadline \nDECEMBER 21\, 2016\, AT 11:59 PM (EST)\nHotel Reservation and Early Registration Deadline\nWant to receive your Meeting badge in the mail before the Meeting? SUMMARY:Webinar: Child Health Providers Helping Family Members Quit Tobacco Use
DESCRIPTION:The California Smokers’ Helpline and its training and technical assistance arm\, the Center for Tobacco Cessation\, are pleased to host this free webinar on Wednesday\, January 18th from noon to 1 pm PST\, Child Health Providers Helping Family Members Quit Tobacco Use\, presented by Jyothi Marbin\, MD and Jonathan Winickoff\, MD\, MPH. \nWebinar Overview\nJonathan Winickoff\, MD\, MPH and Jyothi Marbin\, MD will discuss the impact of tobacco use on families\, and list ways in which child health practices can effectively treat tobacco users in a family. They will also describe how to implement the basic 3 step CEASE model in a busy office practice and share information about policies that can mitigate tobacco exposure in children. \nAbout the Presenters\nJonathan Winickoff\, MD\, MPH\nDr. Jonathan Winickoff is a practicing pediatrician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He has training and experience in health services research\, medical ethics\, neurobiology\, statistics and behavioral theory. His research has led to the creation of the Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) program\, now available in all 50 states for free. NIH-NCI/NIDA/AHRQ funded a national dissemination trial of CEASE and a new award from NCI is evaluating sustainability of this model in the United States. Other major research initiatives have helped describe the phenomenon of thirdhand smoke\, named the health idea of the year by The New York Times. His 2010 special report in the New England Journal of Medicine outlined the social justice\, legal and ethical imperative of implementing completely smoke-free public housing in the U.S. Dr. Winickoff has drafted key tobacco control policy for the AMA\, AAP\, and the APA and served as a scientific advisor for the CDC Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW grants)\, the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program\, Indiana Tobacco Control Program\, Head Start\, WIC\, the Food and Drug Administration\, Department of Housing and Urban Development\, the Institute of Medicine\, and the U.S. Surgeon General through the Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health. \nJyothi Marbin\, MD\nJyothi Nagraj Marbin is a pediatrician at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland\, where she works in the Primary Care and Asthma Clinics. She is the Director of the Pediatrics Leadership for the Underserved Residency Program at UCSF\, and an Associate Residency Program Director for Pediatrics. She is also the Principal Investigator on the CEASE (Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure) California project\, funded by First 5 California\, through which she helps to teach pediatricians across the state of CA how to help parents quit smoking. Her research interests focus on the impact of tobacco on vulnerable populations\, asthma\, and using technology to help improve health of urban teens. Dr. Marbin has served as the Executive Director of City Year Rhode Island\, and also founded and directed the Rhode Island Family Advocacy Program\, which brings lawyers and doctors together to help address policy issues impacting the health of urban children.
