Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts on the theme and current and emerging public health issues.Submission Deadline — Abstracts are due between Feb. 20-24. See the list of components below for specific deadlines. \nAbstract Notification — Presenters will be notified via email of abstract status on Thursday\, June 1\, 2017. \nRules and Regulations\n\nYou do not have to be a member to submit an abstract. However\, if your abstract is accepted for presentation\, the presenting author MUST become an individual APHA member and MUST register for the Annual Meeting by the pre-registration deadline (membership does not apply to Faculty of APHA Learning Institutes or Speakers of invited sessions).\nAbstracts submitted and accepted for the APHA Annual Meeting may not be presented at any other meeting or published prior to Mon. For residents of multi-unit housing\, secondhand smoke can be a major concern\, as it can migrate from other units and common areas and travel through doorways\, cracks in walls\, electrical lines\, plumbing\, and ventilation systems. Secondhand smoke exposure is especially concerning for children\, who are in a critical stage of development. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) overall also pose a serious threat on health across the life course. How does adult smoking in multi-unit housing and ACEs intersect and where are the opportunities for public health to collaborate across sectors? The perspectives across maternal and child health\, tobacco prevention and control\, health equity\, and injury prevention will be explored through ASTHO’s Ask the Experts Virtual Session. \nASTHO has invited Dr. Camara Jones (Past APHA President)\, Darlene Huang (Tobacco Control Legal Consortium)\, and Dr. Joan Gillece (National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors) to participate on a panel moderated by Dr. Rahul Gupta (State Health Officer of West Virginia). These subject-matter experts will highlight and explore the intersection of adult smoking and ACEs with multi-unit housing\, introduce the public health implications of this crossroads\, and answer questions from you related to their area of expertise. \nWhen you register\, submit up to two questions that will be addressed by the speakers during the panel. With two-thirds of Americans now living at least 5 years after a cancer diagnosis\, there are now 13.7 million cancer survivors living in the United States\, and millions more around the world. By 2022\, that number is expected to increase by 35%. Although the growing number of survivors is a welcome sign of progress\, this trend also presents a challenge because many of these individuals require significant\, ongoing care\, such as surveillance for cancer recurrence\, screening for new cancers\, and care for the long-term effects of their initial treatment. \nAs time from an initial diagnosis elapses\, survivors are more likely to receive care from their primary care practitioners (PCPs)\, and survivors with several comorbidities receive care from multiple providers\, underscoring the need to coordinate care among providers. They will also describe how to implement the basic 3 step CEASE model in a busy office practice and share information about policies that can mitigate tobacco exposure in children. \nAbout the Presenters\nJonathan Winickoff\, MD\, MPH\nDr. Jonathan Winickoff is a practicing pediatrician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He has training and experience in health services research\, medical ethics\, neurobiology\, statistics and behavioral theory. His research has led to the creation of the Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) program\, now available in all 50 states for free. NIH-NCI/NIDA/AHRQ funded a national dissemination trial of CEASE and a new award from NCI is evaluating sustainability of this model in the United States. Other major research initiatives have helped describe the phenomenon of thirdhand smoke\, named the health idea of the year by The New York Times. His 2010 special report in the New England Journal of Medicine outlined the social justice\, legal and ethical imperative of implementing completely smoke-free public housing in the U.S. Dr. Winickoff has drafted key tobacco control policy for the AMA\, AAP\, and the APA and served as a scientific advisor for the CDC Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW grants)\, the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program\, Indiana Tobacco Control Program\, Head Start\, WIC\, the Food and Drug Administration\, Department of Housing and Urban Development\, the Institute of Medicine\, and the U.S. Surgeon General through the Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health. \nJyothi Marbin\, MD\nJyothi Nagraj Marbin is a pediatrician at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland\, where she works in the Primary Care and Asthma Clinics. She is the Director of the Pediatrics Leadership for the Underserved Residency Program at UCSF\, and an Associate Residency Program Director for Pediatrics. She is also the Principal Investigator on the CEASE (Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure) California project\, funded by First 5 California\, through which she helps to teach pediatricians across the state of CA how to help parents quit smoking. Her research interests focus on the impact of tobacco on vulnerable populations\, asthma\, and using technology to help improve health of urban teens.
