SUMMARY:Virtual Event: Adverse Childhood Experiences in Multi-Unit Housing
DESCRIPTION:Health at Home: Adult Smoking and Adverse Childhood Experiences in Multi-Unit Housing\nAsk the Experts Virtual Session \nDate: February 17\, 2017\nTime: 2:30 – 4 pm ET\nHosted by: ASTHO \nRegister here: https://astho.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0ApfM0uJNiObkot  \nDescription:\nEliminating indoor smoking is the only way to protect nonsmokers from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke. For residents of multi-unit housing\, secondhand smoke can be a major concern\, as it can migrate from other units and common areas and travel through doorways\, cracks in walls\, electrical lines\, plumbing\, and ventilation systems. Secondhand smoke exposure is especially concerning for children\, who are in a critical stage of development. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) overall also pose a serious threat on health across the life course. How does adult smoking in multi-unit housing and ACEs intersect and where are the opportunities for public health to collaborate across sectors? The perspectives across maternal and child health\, tobacco prevention and control\, health equity\, and injury prevention will be explored through ASTHO’s Ask the Experts Virtual Session. \nASTHO has invited Dr. Camara Jones (Past APHA President)\, Darlene Huang (Tobacco Control Legal Consortium)\, and Dr. Joan Gillece (National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors) to participate on a panel moderated by Dr. Rahul Gupta (State Health Officer of West Virginia). These subject-matter experts will highlight and explore the intersection of adult smoking and ACEs with multi-unit housing\, introduce the public health implications of this crossroads\, and answer questions from you related to their area of expertise. \nWhen you register\, submit up to two questions that will be addressed by the speakers during the panel. The session will offer an engaging discussion among the panelists and will allow them to apply their different expertise areas to the intersections of tobacco control work with other disciplines. Participants will gain insight on how to engage stakeholders across these public health areas\, implement their work with new framing\, and prevent unintended consequences for disparate populations as a result of policy and program interventions.

SUMMARY:Cancer Survivorship Symposium: Advancing Care and Research
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE. \nAs a result of the progress in cancer care\, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. With two-thirds of Americans now living at least 5 years after a cancer diagnosis\, there are now 13.7 million cancer survivors living in the United States\, and millions more around the world. By 2022\, that number is expected to increase by 35%. Although the growing number of survivors is a welcome sign of progress\, this trend also presents a challenge because many of these individuals require significant\, ongoing care\, such as surveillance for cancer recurrence\, screening for new cancers\, and care for the long-term effects of their initial treatment. \nAs time from an initial diagnosis elapses\, survivors are more likely to receive care from their primary care practitioners (PCPs)\, and survivors with several comorbidities receive care from multiple providers\, underscoring the need to coordinate care among providers. Because uniform standards for the care of survivors have not been fully established\, significant efforts are required to understand the needs of survivors and to develop models of comprehensive\, coordinated care that meet those needs. \nThis unique collaboration among the American Academy of Family Physicians\, the American College of Physicians\, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology will provide information about survivorship issues that both primary care physicians and oncologists are faced with throughout the cancer care continuum. The Symposium represents an innovative approach to education and patient care. \nVIEW PROGRAM \nKEY DATES:\nAUGUST 10\, 2016\nRegistration and Hotel Reservations Open \nOCTOBER 4\, 2016\, AT 11:59 PM (EDT)\nAbstract Submission Deadline \nDECEMBER 21\, 2016\, AT 11:59 PM (EST)\nHotel Reservation and Early Registration Deadline\nWant to receive your Meeting badge in the mail before the Meeting? SUMMARY:Webinar: Child Health Providers Helping Family Members Quit Tobacco Use
DESCRIPTION:The California Smokers’ Helpline and its training and technical assistance arm\, the Center for Tobacco Cessation\, are pleased to host this free webinar on Wednesday\, January 18th from noon to 1 pm PST\, Child Health Providers Helping Family Members Quit Tobacco Use\, presented by Jyothi Marbin\, MD and Jonathan Winickoff\, MD\, MPH. \nWebinar Overview\nJonathan Winickoff\, MD\, MPH and Jyothi Marbin\, MD will discuss the impact of tobacco use on families\, and list ways in which child health practices can effectively treat tobacco users in a family. They will also describe how to implement the basic 3 step CEASE model in a busy office practice and share information about policies that can mitigate tobacco exposure in children. \nAbout the Presenters\nJonathan Winickoff\, MD\, MPH\nDr. Jonathan Winickoff is a practicing pediatrician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He has training and experience in health services research\, medical ethics\, neurobiology\, statistics and behavioral theory. His research has led to the creation of the Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) program\, now available in all 50 states for free. SUMMARY:Webinar: Cancer Caregiving in the Community
DESCRIPTION:Register Here for the Cyber-Seminar\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore than 1.6 million Americans are expected to receive a new cancer diagnosis this year. Though cancer most strongly affects the individual\, its impact extends to relatives and friends as well. Family and friends are often central in providing care or assistance in both the immediate and long-term management of cancer. Furthermore\, as a result of advances in treatment and health care changes\, much of cancer care is offered on an outpatient basis and is performed at home by caregivers. Research indicates that caregiving can be both demanding and burdensome – physically\, emotionally\, and financially – for many cancer caregivers. \nThe November Research to Reality cyber seminar will highlight the work of researchers and practitioners working on cancer caregiving in the community. \nErin Kent\, Phd\, MS\, will highlight findings from the National Alliance for Caregiving report Cancer Caregiving in the U.S.\, focusing on cancer caregiver needs\, and gaps and opportunities in outreach\, services\, and support. She will also highlight some current caregiver research resources. Kristen Cox Santiago\, MS\, will describe the work of the Cancer Support Community and how they work with comprehensive cancer coalitions to identify and address the needs of caregivers. \nWe will also be joined by Allison Harvey\, MPH\, CHES\, who will give an overview of the George Washington Cancer Center Report\, Supporting Cancer Survivors through Comprehensive Cancer Control Programs and highlight the place of caregivers in survivorship. \nThe final part of the webinar will offer an opportunity to engage with the presenters.  We invite you to share your own experiences and thoughts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of the cyber-seminar\, participants will be able to: \n\nArticulate cancer caregiver resources for researchers and practitioners.\nIdentify needs unique to cancer caregivers\, and needs of caregivers for patients with chronic illness in general.\nIdentify current opportunities and gaps in cancer caregiver outreach\, services\, and support.\nDescribe the work of the Cancer Support Community in cancer caregiving.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllison Harvey\, MPH\, CHES\n\n\nKristen Cox Santiago\, MS\n\n\nErin E. DESCRIPTION:WHAT: Press Conference/Live Stream URL- Click HERE \nWHEN: Tuesday\, September 13\, 2016 11:00 a.m. (EDT) \nWHERE: Kaiser Family Foundation – Barbara Jordan Conference Center 1330 G St. NW\, Washington\, D.C. 20005 \nTobacco use remains the number one preventable cause of death for African Americans\, claiming more than 45\,000 lives annually. Over 80% of Black smokers use mentholated tobacco products\, which is due to decades of geographically racialized targeting of mentholated tobacco products by the tobacco industry. Though the Food and Drug Administration was given the authority to regulate menthol\, it has yet to do so. The AATCLC and our national supporters are asking for President Obama’s intercession to Save Black Lives… \nDear President Obama\, \nThe African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC) is asking for your direct intercession to help prevent the deaths of the 45\,000 Black people who die every year in this country from tobacco-related diseases. Please direct the FDA to issue a proposed rule to remove all flavored tobacco products\, including mentholated cigarettes\, from the marketplace. The FDA has already done its part by preparing the groundwork for issuing such a proposed rule. Flavored tobacco products (including e-cigarettes\, little cigars\, and cigarillos) are cheap\, sold individually\, and very popular especially among African American\, Latino\, Asian American\, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander youth. The Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) redlining of the menthol and flavors text in the new FDA deeming rule was ill-informed\, at best. The FDA has collected and analyzed all the evidence related to flavored products\, as reflected in the deleted deeming text. These deletions demonstrate that the FDA attempted to protect the public health as it was mandated to do by the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA). Because this groundwork has already been completed\, issuing a new rule can be accomplished quickly… \nSpeakers \nHon.
