DESCRIPTION:Register Here for the Cyber-Seminar\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore than 1.6 million Americans are expected to receive a new cancer diagnosis this year. Though cancer most strongly affects the individual\, its impact extends to relatives and friends as well. Family and friends are often central in providing care or assistance in both the immediate and long-term management of cancer. Furthermore\, as a result of advances in treatment and health care changes\, much of cancer care is offered on an outpatient basis and is performed at home by caregivers. Research indicates that caregiving can be both demanding and burdensome – physically\, emotionally\, and financially – for many cancer caregivers. \nThe November Research to Reality cyber seminar will highlight the work of researchers and practitioners working on cancer caregiving in the community. \nErin Kent\, Phd\, MS\, will highlight findings from the National Alliance for Caregiving report Cancer Caregiving in the U.S.\, focusing on cancer caregiver needs\, and gaps and opportunities in outreach\, services\, and support. She will also highlight some current caregiver research resources. The forum will be moderated by Dr. Elizabeth Rohan\, senior health scientist in the Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch. This webinar will be geared towards National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program awardees and National Network awardees.\n \nLearning Outcomes\nAt the conclusion of the webinar\, participants will be able to:\n\nExplain the importance of disaggregating racial/ethnic population data to assess disparities.\nDescribe current racial/ethnic disparities among adult cigarette users.\nIdentify proven interventions to reduce tobacco use\, particularly among racial/ethnic populations.\nDescribe selected tobacco cessation activities implemented by the National Networks.\nIdentify common barriers and facilitators to tobacco cessation and smoking prevention among the populations served by the National Networks.\nIdentify resources and information to support tobacco prevention and cessation efforts.\n\n \nSpeakers:\nBridgette E. Garrett\, Ph.D.\, M.S.\nDr. Bridgette Garrett is the Associate Director for Health Equity in the Office of Smoking and Health (OSH) at the CDC.  She provides leadership and direction to OSH on efforts needed to achieve equity in tobacco prevention and control to eliminate tobacco-related disparities.  Some of her specific responsibilities include developing guidance for the equitable implementation of tobacco control policies\, and determining effective strategies to reduce disparities in cigarette smoking among populations with disproportionately higher rates of smoking including smokers with low socioeconomic status\, American Indians and Alaska Natives\, smokers with mental illness and substance use disorders\, and LGBT smokers.  Dr. Garrett received a B.S. degree in Natural Sciences/Chemistry from Spelman College\, an M.S. degree from Emory University\, and a Ph.D. in Behavioral Pharmacology from Emory University.  She completed her post-doctoral training in the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.\n \n \nBrandi N. Martell\, M.P.H.\nBrandi Martell has been an ORISE Fellow in OSH since July 2015. She assists in developing efforts and priorities aimed at assessing and eliminating tobacco-related health disparities. Ms. Martell joined the CDC in 2012 as a research and evaluation fellow in the Division of Violence Prevention\, before which she worked in alcohol research as a program specialist\, developing and implementing intervention programs to reduce alcohol-associated harms. Her areas of interest include epidemiology\, research methodology and design\, special populations\, and poly-substance use. DESCRIPTION:Truth Initiative is accepting grant applications from public community colleges across the nation to support efforts to advocate for\, adopt\, and implement a 100% smoke and tobacco-free policy. Truth Initiative\, a national public health organization dedicated to reducing tobacco use\, has already teamed up with 54 community colleges through the Smoke-Free and Tobacco-Free Community College Grant Initiative. To be eligible for a $7\,500 grant\, applicants must submit a proposal by Friday\, Sep 30th. Awardees will also receive technical assistance. Over 80% of Black smokers use mentholated tobacco products\, which is due to decades of geographically racialized targeting of mentholated tobacco products by the tobacco industry. Though the Food and Drug Administration was given the authority to regulate menthol\, it has yet to do so. The AATCLC and our national supporters are asking for President Obama’s intercession to Save Black Lives…  \nDear President Obama\, \nThe African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC) is asking for your direct intercession to help prevent the deaths of the 45\,000 Black people who die every year in this country from tobacco-related diseases. Please direct the FDA to issue a proposed rule to remove all flavored tobacco products\, including mentholated cigarettes\, from the marketplace. The FDA has already done its part by preparing the groundwork for issuing such a proposed rule. Flavored tobacco products (including e-cigarettes\, little cigars\, and cigarillos) are cheap\, sold individually\, and very popular especially among African American\, Latino\, Asian American\, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander youth. The Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) redlining of the menthol and flavors text in the new FDA deeming rule was ill-informed\, at best. The FDA has collected and analyzed all the evidence related to flavored products\, as reflected in the deleted deeming text. These deletions demonstrate that the FDA attempted to protect the public health as it was mandated to do by the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA). DESCRIPTION:Teen Smoking\, Vaping & Dipping: How Should Providers Respond? \nAlthough teen cigarette smoking has dropped to historic lows\, rates of electronic cigarette use is more than double that of regular cigarettes. The U.S. surgeon general has declared adolescent nicotine use a pediatric epidemic. This webinar will provide participants with an overview of current research on rates of nicotine and tobacco use with respect to age and race/ethnicity and the effects of nicotine on the adolescent brain. All cigarette smoking including\, electronic cigarette use\, or smokeless tobacco use have associated health risks. Participants will obtain an understanding of how nicotine use often accompanies other drug use and therefore\, needs to be addressed as part of all substance use disorder treatments.
