SUMMARY:Justice in the Air: Findings from the Tobacco Disparities Messaging Project Hosted by The Evaluators' Network (Emory Centers)
DESCRIPTION:Justice in the Air: Findings from the Tobacco Disparities Messaging Project \nPresentation Overview: \nWords matter\, not only in mass media campaigns\, but also when presenting data to inform public health action. Uneven tobacco protections are a major driver of disease and early death in marginalized communities across America\, but there is a disconnect between this evidence and general public understanding of the issue. The way tobacco related data is presented to the reader can influence the meaning readers’ assign to data and their understanding of how systemic and structural factors drive racial\, social\, and geographic inequity. \nThis webinar will give an overview of a multi-method communication research initiative that used an iterative approach to establish reliable framing recommendations with more than 10\,000 Americans. Representatives from the Tobacco Disparities Messaging Project will provide an overview of their research methods\, describe impactful message frames\, and explain how these concepts can be applied when communicating about data and evaluation findings. \nDate: Tuesday\, February 25\, 2020 \nTime: 3:00 – 4:00 PM ET \nRegister for this webinar! \nEvent link: http://emory.adobeconnect.com/se2020-02-25/event/event_info.html \nPersons with disabilities requiring accommodation should be sure to register at least a week early to ensure your needs are met. \nAt the conclusion of this webinar\, participants will be able to:\n1. Give at least one example of a formative evaluation method for message testing\n2. Describe approaches to talking about equity that may “backfire” and worsen disparities\n3. Apply the Tobacco Disparities Messaging research to communicate about evaluation and epidemiologic findings in ways that increase understanding and engagement \nPresenters \nJulie Sweetland\, Frameworks Institute\nChassidy Hanley\, ChangeLab Solutions \nIf the hyperlink is unavailable to you\, please copy and paste the following address in your web browser: www.tacenters.emory.edu/resources/SEwebinars/index.html. \nAbout the S&E Webinar Series \nAll webinars and coffee breaks are hosted by the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) and powered by Emory Centers for Training and Technical Assistance (Emory Centers) and NORC at the University of Chicago. \nThe webinar series is designed to provide a regular and ongoing way for OSH and tobacco control surveillance and evaluation staff nationwide to share information and resources.

SUMMARY:PTSD & Tobacco Cessation: Trauma-Informed Care to Support Tobacco Cessation in Individuals Diagnosed with PTSD
DESCRIPTION:PTSD & Tobacco Cessation: Trauma-Informed Care to Support Tobacco Cessation in Individuals Diagnosed with PTSD \nDate: Wednesday\, November 13\, 3:00-4:00 p.m. ET\nIndividuals diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are nearly twice as likely to smoke – research shows 45 percent of Americans diagnosed with PTSD smoke\, more than double the rate of the general population. In addition\, individuals diagnosed with PTSD who use tobacco are less successful in their attempts to quit\, and resume smoking at a higher rate following cessation efforts. Applying the principles of trauma-informed care can improve the rate of tobacco cessation among individuals diagnosed with PTSD and enhance overall behavioral health treatment outcomes. \nJoin the National Behavioral Health Network on Wednesday\, November 13\, 3:00-4:00 p.m. ET for PTSD & Tobacco Cessation: Trauma-Informed Care to Support Tobacco Cessation in Individuals Diagnosed with PTSD\, a webinar to support practitioners in enhancing their treatment approaches for individuals diagnosed with PTSD. The webinar builds on June 16 and September 16 webinars\, Connecting the Dots: Addiction\, Trauma and Tobacco Use and Trauma-Informed Motivational Interviewing to Support Tobacco Cessation. \nSubject matter experts Taslim van Hattum\, LCSW\, MPH\, Senior Director of Practice Improvement at the National Council for Behavioral Health; and Karen Johnson\, MSW\, LCSW\, Trauma-Informed Services Consultant at the National Council for Behavioral Health and subject matter expert in trauma-informed care and PTSD will guide the discussion. \nRegister Today\n

SUMMARY:Kicking Butts: How to help employees quit tobacco with incentives Sponsored by Truth Initiative®
DESCRIPTION:Tobacco use means higher healthcare costs. Add in the costly ripple effect in other areas\, such as increased work absences and greater disability claims\, and the business case to focus on tobacco is hard to ignore. \nAbout 70% of smokers say they want to quit; more than 60% of e-cigarette users say they want to quit\, too. A quit-tobacco program at the workplace can give employees a better chance of kicking the habit. \nTo motivate more tobacco users to quit or attempt to quit\, more than 50% of employers use some form of an incentive—including a tobacco surcharge. Yet\, offering the right premium differential for tobacco use takes careful preparation. \nJust ask Generac\, a leading manufacturer of commercial and industrial generators.  Generac has 3\,800+ employees in the U.S. working in office and production settings. Like other employers\, Generac has concerns about the health of their employees who smoke\, use e-cigarettes or smokeless tobacco. \nGenerac has a long-standing tradition of providing tools\, resources and financial incentives to employees through their Healthy Living Program. In 2006\, Generac began to provide financial rewards to employees who take an active role in maintaining good health. \nIn 2018\, Generac added additional incentives for individuals who would “Commit to be Tobacco Free.”  Generac’s strong communication strategy and plan initiatives are progressive\, and their results have shown to have an impact on trend. \nDate: Tuesday\, November 05\, 2019 \nTime: 1:00 PM ET \nRegister Today \n\n\nPRESENTERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJessie Saul Ph.D.\nDirector of Client Success\, EX Program by\nTruth Initiative\nView Profile\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristine Reichardt\nHealth & Wellness Manager\nGenerac Power Systems Inc\nView Profile
